Painting plein air provides a tangible link with the Cornish landscape. The changing light or turning tide compels the need to be economic with detail. The result is a paired down study, the style is dynamic and arbitrary, conveying the freshness of a sketch. The way I feel, the temperature and wind all influence the handling of the paint. I often sketch and paint on site which informs my larger studio pieces. Working through a painting I am constantly looking for balance while keeping the medium loose and playful. The subject is a shifting and natural scene, drawing the eye to a distant horizon and up to the sky.
My influences come from the Romantic era of Constable, Gainsborough and Turner; depictions of the sublime and limitless qualities of nature. The Impressionist paintings of Claude Monet and the atmospheric and tonal landscapes of James Whistler.
