An ongoing exploration of the well known and more hidden gems of the Cornish landscape, drawing inspiration from literature, history and culture.

 

The good weather in early summer took me up to the high ground of Bodmin Moor to begin a series of moorland vistas and studies of the clouds on small, intimate 12x9" panels. This got me started and warmed me up for the coming year's work.

​The Golant paintings originally came about from a private commission. The concepts and sketches were done at dusk by the riverside over several sessions during the course of July 2026. The warmth and tranquillity of the summer evenings allowed me to sketch and inspired me to find a literary equivalent of the River Fowey's magical quality in the evening.

 

I discovered 'A Cornish Chorus' an anthology published in 1948 by Muriel Hawkey. A celebration of Cornwall's landscape expressed in a book of poetry and writing from notable Cornish and visiting literary figures.

The Curlew cry in lonely places,

Cool, sweet, melancholy they cry,

Up the river where the dark trees frown

To the water's edge and little fields

Fall steeply down.
