My work is an ongoing exploration through the seasons of the natural beauty of the Cornish landscape, drawing inspiration from poetry, history and childhood memories.

The water breathes a quiet sigh,

Beneath the lowering Cornish Sky.

Original oil and acrylic paintings, preliminary sketches of Polzeath, Camel Estuary in North Cornwall and paintings done in Corfu will feature in this year's show, including watercolours and sketchbooks. 

 

The good weather in late spring took me up to the remote East Moor area of Bodmin Moor to begin a series of moorland vistas and studies of the clouds on small, intimate 12x9" panels.

​In midsummer I went down to Golant to do research for a private commission. The colour sketches and en plein air paintings were done at dusk by the riverside over several sessions during the course of July 2026. The warm and still summer evenings allowed me to sketch and inspired me to find a literary equivalent of the River Fowey's magical quality in the evening.

 

I discovered 'A Cornish Chorus' an anthology published in 1948 by Muriel Hawkey. A celebration of Cornwall's landscape expressed in a book of poetry and writing from notable Cornish and visiting literary figures.

The Curlew cry in lonely places,

Cool, sweet, melancholy they cry,

Up the river where the dark trees frown

To the water's edge and little fields

Fall steeply down.
